First let's provide definitions for the 4 terms covered in this article:

Retail margin is the difference between your book’s wholesale price and your book’s retail price. For example, a book with a cover price of $10 and a wholesale price of $5 has a 50% retail margin. This is the profit enjoyed by the retailer.

Wholesale price is the cost of your book to a retailer. To use the same rudimentary example, a book with a cover price of $10 and a retail margin of 50% will be sold to a retailer for $5 wholesale price.

Retail price is the same as cover price or selling price or list price. This is the cost of the book to the end consumer (the reader). The retail price is typically printed on the cover of the book and also “embedded” within the barcode on the back. For example, a book with a wholesale price of $5 and a retail margin of 50% will have a retail price of $10.

Trade discount is the percentage off the retail price that a wholesaler (not a retailer) pays for your book. Since the retail margin is always a portion of the trade discount, the trade discount always exceeds the retail margin. Distributors typically expect between 50% - 70% in order to provide an acceptable margin to the retailer. A book with a retail price of $10 and a retail margin of 50% might have a trade discount of 60%, and therefore the wholesale price is $5 and the trade discounted price is $4.

Confused yet? Don't be. Understanding book math is what separates successful authors from unsuccessful ones. As you can see, retail margin, wholesale price, the trade discount, and retail price are interconnected.

MAKING DISTRIBUTION WORK FOR YOU

The higher your trade discount, the greater your level of distribution. Think about it - distributors want to make money, too.

While your book's trade discount is but a piece of your pie (albeit a big piece), it is the entire cake for distributors and retailers, who together must split the take. The greater the trade discount, the larger their piece of the pie, and the greater incentive they have to distribute your book, sell your book, and market your book, etc.

The proper trade discount depends upon the author's goals, and can vary from author to author just as readily as from book to book. Typically, the higher the retail margin, the higher the cover price, so authors interested in maintaining the lowest cover price possible will often opt for a lower retail margin. This may be okay, and even preferred, if the book's largest market is through on-line sales.

Conversely, those authors who long for the best distribution possible will elect a higher trade discount, even though their cover price will increase accordingly (or their profit will decrease accordingly). Non-fiction or niche-markets are less affected by higher retail prices. Additionally, greater distribution is often advantageous in finding those niche markets. Suffice it to say, a non-fiction book can almost always sustain a higher trade discount than a fiction book.

Trade discounts can be as low as 20% to successfully get listed on Internet retailers like Amazon.com, who manage to make a profit with such low margins through EDI (electronic data interface) with distributors like Ingram and on-demand publishers like Outskirts Press.

By comparison, trade discounts can be as high as 75% - 80% when dealing with a niche wholesaler, or when attempting distribution for a book that does not have a proven market. In these cases, the distributor may be padding the coffers a bit in anticipation for a "harder sell" and perhaps, also, in preparation for offering an increased retail margin to close the deal.

INDUSTRY STANDARDS

Industry standards for retail margins are difficult to define because, ultimately, it comes down to negotiation between all parties involved. Publishers have the power to negotiate with distributors, who have the power to negotiate with retailers, who have the ability to negotiate with the reader, but the typical trade discount is around 55%, which allows for a typical retail margin of 40%.

Publishing-on-demand is removing some of the participants in this little dance, and as a result, the same piece of pie is being divided among fewer people, resulting in more money for the remaining players (especially the author). This is particularly true if the author is going after online sales exclusively, which allows the author to set a much lower trade discount with little to no repercussions when publishing via a flexible on-demand publisher such as Outskirts Press, who lets authors set their own pricing. Now you have the flexibility to do it and the knowledge to do it right.

A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging, usually on a short-term basis. Hotels often provide a number of additional guest services such as a restaurant, a swimming pool or childcare. Some hotels have conference services and meeting rooms and encourage groups to hold conventions and meetings at their location. Hotels differ from motels in that most motels have drive-up, exterior entrances to the rooms, while hotels tend to have interior entrances to the rooms, which may increase guests' safety and present a more upmarket image. Basic accommodation of a room with only a bed, a cupboard, a small table and a washstand has largely been replaced by rooms with en-suite bathrooms and climate control. Other features found may be a telephone, an alarm clock, a TV, and broadband Internet connectivity. Food and drink may be supplied by a mini-bar (which often includes a small refrigerator) containing snacks and drinks (to be paid for on departure), and tea and coffee making facilities (cups, spoons, an electric kettle and sachets containing instant coffee, tea bags, sugar, and creamer or milk).

In the United Kingdom a hotel is required by law to serve food and drinks to all comers within certain stated hours; to avoid this requirement it is not uncommon to come across "private hotels" which are not subject to this requirement. However, in Japan the capsule hotel supplies minimal facilities and room space. The cost and quality of hotels are usually indicative of the range and type of services available. Due to the enormous increase in tourism worldwide during the last decades of the 20th century, standards, especially those of smaller establishments, have improved considerably. For the sake of greater comparability, rating systems have been introduced, with the one to five stars classification being most common.

"Boutique Hotel" is a term originating in North America to describe intimate, usually luxurious or quirky hotel environments. Boutique hotels differentiate themselves from larger chain or branded hotels by providing an exceptional and personalized level of accommodation, services and facilities. Boutique hotels are furnished in a themed, stylish and/or aspirational manner. Although usually considerably smaller than a mainstream hotel (ranging from 3 to 100 guest rooms) boutique hotels are generally fitted with telephone and wi-fi Internet connections, honesty bars and often cable/pay TV. Guest services are attended to by 24 hour hotel staff. Many boutique hotels have on site dining facilities, and the majority offer bars and lounges which may also be open to the general public. Of the total travel market a small percentage are discerning travelers, who place a high importance on privacy, luxury and service delivery.

As this market is typically corporate travelers, the market segment is non-seasonal, high-yielding and repeat, and therefore one which boutique hotel operators target as their primary source of income. A number of hotels have entered the public consciousness through popular culture, such as the Ritz Hotel in London, UK ('Putting on The Ritz') and Hotel Chelsea in New York City, subject of a number of songs and also the scene of the alleged stabbing of Nancy Spungen by her boyfriend Sid Vicious. Hotels that enter folklore like these two are also often frequented by celebrities, as is the case both with the Ritz and the Chelsea. Other famous hotels include the Beverly Hills Hotel, the Hotel Bel-Air and the Chateau Marmont, in California, USA, Watergate complex in Washington DC ,the Hotel Astoria in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the Hotel George V and Hôtel Ritz in Paris, Palazzo Versace hotel on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, Hotel Hermitage and Hotel de Paris in Monaco (in the French Riviera) and Hotel Leningradskaya in Moscow. Many hotels can be considered destinations in themselves, by dent of unusual features of the lodging and/or its immediate environment.

Treehouse hotels Some hotels, such as the Costa Rica Tree House in the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica, or Treetops Hotel in Aberdare National Park, Kenya, are built with living trees as structural elements, making them treehouses. The Ariau Towers near Manaus, Brazil is in the middle of the Amazon, on the Rio Negro. Bill Gates even invested and had a suite built there with satellite internet/phone. Another hotel with treehouse units is Bayram's Tree Houses in Olympos, Turkey Cave hotels Desert Cave Hotel in Coober Pedy, South Australia and the Cuevas Pedro Antonio de Alarcón (named after the author) in Guadix, Spain, as well as several hotels in Cappadocia, Turkey, are notable for being built into natural cave formations, some with rooms underground.

Capsule hotels Capsule hotels are a type of economical hotels that are quite common in Japan. Ice hotels, such as the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, melt every spring and are rebuilt out of ice and snow each winter. Snow hotels The Mammut Snow Hotel in Finland is located within the walls of the Kemi snow castle, which is the biggest in the world. It includes The Mammut Snow Hotel, The Castle Courtyard, The Snow Restaurant and a chapel for weddings, etc. Its furnishings and its decorations, such as sculptures, are made of snow and ice. There is snow accommodation also in Lainio Snow Hotel in Lapland (near Ylläs), Finland. Garden hotels Garden hotels, famous for their gardens before they became hotels, includes Gravetye Manor, the home of William Robinson and Cliveden, designed by Charles Barry with a rose garden by Geoffrey Jellicoe.

Underwater hotels As of 2005, the only hotel with an underwater room that can be reached without Scuba diving is Utter Inn in Lake Mälaren, Sweden. It only has one room, however, and Jules' Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida, which requires scuba diving, is not much bigger. Hydropolis is an ambitious project to build a luxury hotel in Dubai, UAE, with 220 suites, all on the bottom of the Persian Gulf, 20 meters (66 feet) below the surface. Its architecture will feature two domes that break the surface and an underwater train tunnel, all made of transparent materials such as glass and acrylic. Other unusual hotels The Library Hotel in New York City is unique in that its ten floors are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System. The Rogers Centre, formerly SkyDome, in Toronto, Canada is the only stadium to have a hotel connected to it, with 70 rooms overlooking the field. The Burj al-Arab hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, built on an artificial island, is structured in the shape of a sail of a boat.

For Viral Residual Affiliate wealth- Use a FREE ebook as Your Sales Weapon...

This is the best way I know of creating multiple streams of residual (recurring) income and most affiliate marketers don't use this technique yet. It allows you to harness the net's truly amazing power for viral marketing.

Outside of the Internet viral marketing might just mean word of mouth from your happy customers to spread your sales message. But the high speed digital world of the 'net means your affiliate links branded into a free eBook will spread like wild fire with a little encouragement from you.

Why? Because people love valuable free information that shows them how they can make a lot of money on the 'net. Some of the people that get your branded copy of the ebook will send it on to their friends and their subscribers and then some of these people will send it on and so on, creating a whirlwind effect.

Ideally you want your affiliate links inside the free ebook to be for multi tier affiliate programs as well as single tier programs, so you get paid on the sales of your referrals and on the sales you make from people when they follow your affiliate links in your version of the ebook.

The branding process should be very quick and easy, whereby you just enter your affiliate IDs into spaces, such as entering your Clickbank nickname.

Your free ebook should also contain your links to free viral traffic and free viral list building programs. This means that you'll be combining viral programs very easily which is extremely powerful. To do this, you just need to join these free viral programs and enter your IDs into the free ebook when you brand it as before.

Time for some hard truths. Whilst viral marketing is the cheapest and most effective way to advertise on the net, you will have to do some initial marketing of your free viral ebook. But this doesn't have to be expensive though and the fact is, there are no get rich quick schemes and every legitimate legal business has at least some costs. It's just that if you harness viral marketing, your costs will be reduced dramatically and you'll probably earn far more than from your advertising dollar.

So even though the hard work of creating a free valuable ebook and download page should be done for you, you'll need to fuel and seed the viral processes. Here are some really cheap ideas to advertise your site:

- You can get signs made for your car that have your web address on. Get your family and maybe friends to put them on their cars too.

- You can create rubber ink stamps with your web address on and stamp all your outgoing mail.

- Have leaflet drops done. The leaflets should be delivered on week days to businesses and on the weekends to peoples' homes.

- Put some of these leaflets on notice boards - just get them exposed as much as you can.

As you can see, these are offline advertising methods and these are often better than advertising online due to more competition online.

Whilst viral marketing is free and highly effective, search engine optimization on the other hand, for example, is definitely not cheap - requiring ongoing expense and effort to stay on top of the free listings and even then it's a crap shoot as to whether you'll get indexed high up.

Because the leading search engines change their algorithms so often, even if you do get a good position for a while - you can all but drop out of the listings in a moment when their algorithms change.

But if you want to use the free listings on the search engines for promotion, having a lot of backlinks to your site to get a good page rank will help no end (not reciprocal links) and there are very cheap ways of doing this.

All I'm saying is that by harnessing the power of viral marketing, you're using a far easier and cheaper way to advertise and using paid listings on the search engines to promote your free viral ebook can work very well to set the ball in motion. It is also a great help if you are given a customizable web page that allows your prospects to download your branded copy of the free income generating ebook.

To sum up - if you don't harness viral marketing, very often you'll just end up spending a dollar to get back about a dollar. If you do use viral marketing though and your promoting proven products with effective, well tested sales pages, you can make a fortune on the 'net as many people do.

I have a suggestion for all of the unpublished or little published writers our there. If you want to improve your writing skills, read more books and get writing credits, you might want to apply to be a children’s book reviewer. I decided to become a book reviewer over a year ago and it has helped me in many ways.

FREE BOOKS

I knew this would get your attention. Did you know that book reviewers receive FREE BOOKS in the mail? It’s true. The publication that you work for will send you a list of books that need reviewing every month or quarter. You then choose books that look interesting and after the publication gets feedback from all of their reviewers, they mail books to each of you. The first time I got home and found a Federal Express envelope on my doorstep with a free book inside, my heart beat a little faster. Most months I receive 2 or 3 children’s books that need reviewing. The books are usually hardcover, but not always. They are also new books and you will get to read them before the general public. I don’t know about you, but that is exciting to me.

CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEWERS ARE IN DEMAND

We all have one thing in common: we love children’s books. We wouldn’t be trying to write for children if we didn’t. Most book reviewers are in this business for the free books, but most of them want to read adult fiction. I like adult fiction, but my skills were needed on the children’s side. The publishers get too many volunteers to review adult fiction.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Getting started is surprisingly easy. I write reviews for both Kidsreads.com and Teenreads.com. I originally queried on the Internet to find companies that review books. You might want to start with an online review service and later offer your skills to a print newspaper or magazine. The online review services provide reviewers with free books, but generally do not pay them. Later you could become a paid reviewer when you have clips of your reviews to send to a magazine or newspaper. I wrote a sample review for a middle grade novel I had read. I sent the sample review to several on line review services and I was accepted as a reviewer soon after that.

MEETING DEADLINES

I have learned valuable time management skills as a reviewer. With each book that I receive, I get a review deadline. I usually have about one month to read and write my review of each book, but it is sometimes shorter. This has sharpened my time management skills and it has made me a faster reader. Writing reviews also forces you to cut through the book and write a tight summary. This skill could come in handy if you ever need to write a query letter or a synopsis of a novel.

READERS MAKE BETTER WRITERS

Every writer has heard that you won’t have the skills to write unless you read. I now read at least thirty-six children’s novels each year in order to write my reviews. Most of the books I have reviewed have been quite good. I have had the thrill of being one of the first to read new books by Patricia Reilly Giff and Walter Dean Myers.

If you like to read children’s books as much as I do, I think you might enjoy being a book reviewer. It forces you to read and write on schedule. You will be surprised that when your writing life becomes more structured, you will be a much more productive writer. Good luck and happy reading!

William Aloysius Keleher was a lawyer by profession. However, he did many other things besides practicing law since he did not want to limit himself to homogenous work. Instead, he chose to be different and versatile. He was a telegraph operator, newspaper reporter, city editor, even a counter clerk in his vivid life. Perhaps, the most significant extra-legal activity where he indulged himself was writing. There was no denying that he was an effective writer. Keleher’s expertise as a writer was first unearthed in 1908 when he was appointed by a local newspaper’s authorities to work as a news reporter. They were very impressed by his writing abilities which were re-furnished while he was writing for the Albuquerque Journal and Albuquerque Evening Herald. Later on, he got the job of the city editor in both of them. One will be mistaken if he reckons that Keleher showed his full potential as a writer in those newspapers.

An avid scholar of the New Mexico history, William Keleher formally became an authoritative writer on the subject in the year of 1929 when he delivered a speech in a conference (arranged by The Texas Bar Association) that took place in Amarillo, Texas. The date was July 29th; the topic was Maxwell Land Grant (The largest grant ever made in the State of New Mexico that engendered more than its share of controversy and disputes over the years). After thirteen years, it would turn into his first book entitled “The Maxwell Land Grant”. The book consisted over an hundred and sixty pages and came out in hardcover binding. University of New Mexico Press, the publisher, brought out a revised version of the book in the year of 1964. Even today, one can avail this seventeen-chaptered book from online stores and libraries with an extensive collection.

Violence in Lincoln County: 1869-1881, written in the year of 1957, is considered to be a masterpiece by William Keleher. In this book, he described the 1870s scenario in details. The book tells the readers that the Lincoln Country War was an outcome of the conflict between partisan politics and business. Regarding the issue of land ownership, the cattle barons and the corrupt mercantilists clashed with each other. Big names like McSween, Turnstall, Chisum, Murphy, Riley and Dolan were mentioned. As a result of the clash, power was being threatened and people were being killed. However, peace was declared in the territory after the demise of Billy the Kid, an infamous outlaw, in the year of 1881. William Keleher provided sufficient information and first-hand reports in his book, for which it was perceived as a invaluable masterpiece on the western history.

In 1969, Rydal press published “Memoirs 1892 1969”, another book by William Keleher. In this book, he told readers about the events he witnessed in his lifetime. Mainly, the book contained biographical information. The authoer called the book a combination of autobiography, biography, narrative and memoir. He also said that this book was written especially for New Mexicans of good heart. The book was republished after several years.

In 1945, came The Fabulous Frontier, another quality work by Keleher. University of New Mexico Press brought out this 338-page book. In 1962, there was a re-print of The Fabulous Frontier.

William Keleher encountered enormous challenges in finishing “Turmoil in New Mexico, 1846-1868”, a study of truly professional quality. The book which was written in 1952 reflected the investigative skills he obtained through legal practice, sophisticated techniques and sheer love of the subject matter.

Keleher’s expertise in literary works was also seen in his short writings. They mainly dealt with New Mexico history and included longer essays and newspaper articles.

What is most impressive about the writer William Keleher is that he did not show any negligence to either of his two most demanding tasks (practicing law and writing). William Keleher's law practice required regular office hours which he was always faithful. The research and writing of each of his books needed a discrete set of hours as he was careful not to let his literary work breach into his first profession.

William A. Keleher was not only a great lawyer but also an effective writer. His books are considered invaluable from historical perspective.

Much has been written about how to succeed with ebook and software master resale rights.

However in this article we will see five key reasons why people fail with their master resale rights business.

Selling ebook resell rights, or software resell rights can be profitable but these are 5 key things you have to make sure you avoid:

1) Leaving products sat too long on your hard drive.

This is the number one failing of most people who purchase the master resale rights to an ebook or software product.

Leaving the product sat on their hard drives and being too lazy to make the necessary changes and upload it.

Buying a resale rights product and never putting it online is like buying a car and never putting any fuel in the tank.

There's no point.

What's a hot ebook resale rights product right now, may not be hot a hot resale rights product few months down the line, so get that product up and online asap!

2) Payment Links Not Working.

Another reason is people put up the product and they don't bother checking their payment links.

If you've ever been to a website where you have read about the product, and decided for you it seems like a "Must Have", taken out your wallet, readied your credit card, and pressed the "Order Now" button only to find the link doesn't work or doesn't direct you to the payment page...

You'll know how annoying it is.

However for the business owner - they've just lost a sale and a lot of credibility, or trust in purchasing with the customer.

I cannot believe how many website owners work so hard to get their products online, only to fall and fail at this crucial step, and not bother checking the payment link!

Your ebook or software resale rights business is doomed if you don't check your payment links.

You MUST ensure that your payment links are working!

3) Using Free Web Hosting.

Listen up! If you want to create a serious online business then please just steer clear of cheap looking free hosting accounts.

These tend to have adverts and pop ups that you can't control, and also limit page setup or layout.

Would you do business on a page or domain name that cries out free hosting? Save free hosting accounts for your family and holiday snaps, not for a master resale rights business.

It makes sense to invest in your own domain name and get your own paid for hosting service.

Not only will it look far more professional, but you will also have far fewer problems in the long run.

4) Not Capturing Visitors Email Addresses.

Unless you have customers to go back to and market to again and again, you will run out of money faster than you make it trying to constantly get new visitors to your web site.

So much has been written about capturing peoples email addresses that I won't try to go into it in any detail here.

You've read it a million times already haven't you?

What?...

The old adage "The Money Is In The List" and so on and so forth... You get the picture.

5) Spamming.

Make sure you use a reputable autoresponder service and don't spam.

People hate it and it will shut your business down faster than you can say "I didn't" - Don't Do It.

These are just 5 reasons why people fail with a master resale rights business online.

Avoid them, and you will get much closer to online success with ebook and software master resale rights.
